Similar to all other former member states of the Yugoslav Federation, Bosnia/Herzegovina has initiated programs of economic and energy reform and has also announced policies encouraging energy conservation and alternative sources of energy, particularly renewables.  However, due to the conflict within the country in the early to mid-1990s much of the energy infrastructure has been destroyed and remains heavily damaged.  Therefore, there is more focus on the rehabilitation and repair of existing energy infrastructure rather than the development of new renewable energy projects.

 

As a result of the recent ethnic war it was difficult to secure complete and up to date information.  Over 60 percent of existing energy capacity in Bosnia/Herzegovina utilizes hydro facilities and a large portion of it has been damaged.   This implies numerous opportunities to rehabilitate and develop both small and large hydro projects in Bosnia/Herzegovina.  There is limited data available on solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal technologies to assess their overall potential.

The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska announced a plan to invest 40m euros in the construction of a new hydro power plant. The facility will have a capacity of 40 megawatts.

Bosnia Gets Its First Biofuel Plant
After months of negotiations, the US consortium E&I Group announced earlier this month that it would build the first bio-ethanol factory and refinery in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the northern river-port town and district of Brcko. The new plant is expected to start production in four years’ time.

Bosnia's Electricity Producer To Build Four Hydro Plants
The plants will be located along the Bistrica and Janjina rivers near the town of Pale in eastern Bosnia and they will have a combined installed capacity of 50 MW and an annual electricity output of 160,000 KW.
