The current political and economic climate in Georgia is unstable, resulting in a paucity of investment in the country’s renewable energy resources.
The most promising renewable energy resources in Georgia are geothermal, wind, and hydro power. The geothermal resource is of high quality with minimal amounts of dissolved salts and consequently reduced scaling during utilization. Currently, 350 MWth of capacity is being used with 465 MWth of proven reserves. Resource use to date has not widely utilized re-injection of the waste water and has resulted in depletion of some of the resources. There are good prospects for further development of 15 MWe of multiple small geothermal power plants exist in Western Georgia and in Tbilisi (mainly for multistage heat supply systems).
Wind power potential is estimated to be at least 2,000 MW. Hydro power provides 50 percent of the country’s generating capacity at the present time, and there is opportunity for further development. Hydro power will continue to play a major role in Georgia’s electricity mix due to positive hydrological conditions and limited fuel supply.
